The Instruction Manual For Living

I always wanted an instruction manual.

Please!!! I just wanted someone to tell me what to do.

Except, don’t. I didn’t really want anyone to tell me what to do.  I would, in fact, do the exact opposite of what you told me to do.

If you’ve ever been an insecure rebel like I was, you know exactly what I’m saying.

Tell me! But don’t! But tell me. Why does everyone else knooooooooow? But I don’t.

Is it any wonder I had to drink to make it through? 

What I wanted was a basic sense of how to move through the world. I devoured books looking for the answer. I scrutinized my peers to copy what they said/did/wore. When I couldn’t figure it out, I froze. Or avoided.

Alcohol made all of that OK. If I didn’t know, I didn’t care. I just rolled with it. 

Whether you use alcohol to make it through the unknown. Or sugar. Or you sneak a smoke, take a toke, peep at the blokes…

See what I did there? I made your sins a catchy rhyme.

Whatever you do, you can stop now.

Here’s your manual. Easy as 1-2-3.

If you do this, you’re golden:

  1. Clean up the past. Who still pisses you off? Where do you still feel ashamed? Even if you “should be beyond all that by now,” you might still have parts of past situations that you’re not past yet.
  2. Live in today. Right here where your feet are. Look down–there they are! The body is always in the present. Find your body and you’ll find the present. The best news is that there is never fear in the present. It is always in the future.
  3. Dare toward the future. Do the scary things. Rip off the band-aid. Be willing to fix it later if you totally screw it up. It just takes 20 seconds of courage. You can do 20 seconds. I promise.
  4. Repeat. 

Simple. But not easy. Like most things, it’s much easier said than done.

Just get over your past and complete your goals. Not so fast.
